Arco Mirelli Station
Metro Line 6
Hans Kollhoff | 2024
The Arco Mirelli station, located at the western edge of the Villa Comunale near Piazza della Repubblica, was designed by German architect Hans Kollhoff.
The construction of the station provided an opportunity to redesign the area above it, including the renovation of the roundabout around the "Monument to the Scugnizzo," which was restored and repositioned in alignment with Viale Dohrn. For the design of both the exterior and interior spaces, Kollhoff chose to maintain continuity with the "genius loci" of the intervention area and the design of the site's historical preexistences.
The station’s above-ground structure is distinguished by a large glass and steel pavilion with a light and elegant framework that creates a strong connection between the architecture and natural light. In the evening, artificial interior lighting transforms the pavilion into a luminous landmark for the surrounding area.
Descending into the station, the light tones of travertine emphasize the classical elements of pillars, pilasters, moldings, and balustrades. As one moves further down toward the train platforms, these tones transition into dark gray lava stone and deep blue plaster finishes.
On the mezzanine level, the station houses an artwork by German artist Rebecca Horn, who passed away in September 2024. It consists of a series of copper cones that seem almost animated by an elegant, organic movement. The interplay of shadows and light, combined with a sound installation by musician André Baum, creates an immersive experience, further enhanced by the presence of reflective elements inside some of the cones.
